Key Takeaways:

  • P.J. Akeeagok, Premier of Nunavut, has named Joe Kunuk as principal secretary and Virginia Mearns as deputy minister of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs (EIA) and cabinet secretary.

Since September, Jeff Chown, who had been working in Mearns’ new position, is also returning as deputy minister of finance and secretary to the financial management board.

“He has been invaluable as I begin my new role, and I wish him all the best in his return to Finance,” Akeeagok said on Chown. Kunuk has held several senior management positions with the Government of Nunavut, including executive director of the Inuit Circumpolar Council and chief negotiator for the Qikiqtani Inuit Association.

“I am very grateful to have Mr. Kunuk assist me in my new role,” Akeeagok said. “His perspective and experience will be valuable assets.”

Mearns previously worked as the principal secretary to former Nunavut premier Joe Savikataaq and as the associate deputy minister to EIA. He was in charge of overseeing strategic planning and direction for the Nunavut government.

“Ms. Mearns did an outstanding job in her previous position, and I am excited that she will now be my link to the public service and administration,” Akeeagok said.
