Baker Lake MLA Craig Simailak assigned as Nunavut’s new minister of justice

The territorial government declared Monday that Nunavut’s latest cabinet member would be in control of the Justice Department and the Qulliq Energy Corporation.

Craig Simailak, who is the MLA for Baker Lake, was selected the prior week to the executive council during a particular leadership forum. He was declared into cabinet Friday to replace Iqaluit-Manirajak MLA Adam Arreak Lightstone, who quit after a report saw him in a dispute of interest.

On Monday, Premier P.J. Akeeagok gave a statement declaring Simailak’s portfolios. Simailak will take control of them as of May 5. “As a second-term MLA and ex municipal politician, Minister Simailak gets a fantastic deal of experience in our section,” he said.

Before becoming MLA, Simailak spent 20 years performing for the Qulliq Energy Corporation. His prior experiences have served on Baker Lake’s council and served as mayor, and he has been concerned with committees and volunteer organizations within the community of Nunavut.
